Making Sense of Little Minds
If you want to help your children succeed, you have to pick up the slack for their
yet unformed brains. Huh?
That's right. Studies have shown that several key areas of the brain aren't fully
formed until the age of 25. So although you may think your son or daughter should
know better, they might actually not have that full ability.
This, of course, isn't a loophole to let kids run wild without consequence. Instead,
it's a chance for you to glimpse the bigger picture of what's happening in younger
minds.
Because they can't fully appreciate the consequences of their actions, many kids
will see only the short-term value of their decisions. They see the immediate thrill
or payoff, not the backlash around the corner. This leads to poor decisions.
But you can make a difference.
By helping them to understand the full effects of their actions, you can play the
fully functioning brain while their own works to catch up. They'll be motivated to
do the right thing--because they'll better grasp the long-term benefits--and be more
willing to let the temptations of trouble pass on by.
