You Can't Force It
When I coached baseball as a teen, parents would ask me how they could get Jimmy or Johnny to pay attention during practice and to try harder during games.

I did my best to offer advice, but I was just a few years older than the kids I was coaching; I didn't know the answer. Given the chance to go back I would now tell them all the same thing: if your kids don't want it, there isn't much you can do to make them want it.

It's not the words parents want to hear, but believe me it would save millions of moms and dads weeks, months, and years of anguish.

Some things can't be avoided: school is on the agenda no matter what. But when it comes to variables that can be changed, a sport or instrument perhaps, sometimes you have to accept that your kids don't want it as badly as you and move on to the next chapter.
