A Freeing Thought
"What if I can't do it?"
This is a common worry, and among its many causes is the fear of what other
people will think. "What will they say if I fail?" "What will
they think if I screw everything up?"
This is more than a common worry; it's also incredibly oppressive. Second
lives are streaming through the minds of millions of people, lives that will
never make it past their skulls. The fear of what someone else might say
keeps those ideas locked away.
Fortunately there's an easy way out from under all those eyes. It will take
some time to develop, and it will be scary at first, but your life will be
better for it if you live by this belief:
The point of your life is not to squeeze into other people's expectations.
The point of being alive is not to fit in; it's to dive into the things that
interest you, to become the kind of person that you'd look up to. Who cares
if that leads to a few failures or stumbles?
Your job isn't to project an image of perfection. When you realize the point
isn't to please the world, it's a lot easier to live your own life.
So ask yourself: what would you do differently if no one were watching? Then
do it.
