How to Get Your Groove Back
Bad news can leave you dazed and confused. Just the other day I received an
unexpected bill in the mail. I couldn't believe the total amount. In that moment
my stomach sank and my mood soured. I felt doomed and worried for the rest of the
day. How was I going to pay for this?
Fortunately, one of the tips below snapped me out of my unhelpful state of mind.
Soon enough I was thinking clearly and working on a solution.
When bad news shakes your confidence, chances are that one of the tips below will
help to get your groove back.
1. Get Organized: Few activities work as quickly to ease your mind and as
getting organized. Every piece of paper put in its place is another sense of relief
to the system. Every room cleaned or desk drawer cleared is another dose of medicine
to a frazzled brain.
When something goes wrong, take a break from worry and organize something. Your
brain will thank you.
2. Do Something You Enjoy: This tip is both obvious and counterintuitive.
It's obvious because doing something you like is a sure way to make you feel
better. It's counterintuitive because ignoring whatever problem you have and
doing something else actually helps you come up with a solution.
You wouldn't immediately think that the best way to fix a leak is to ignore it,
but in some cases it works wonders. It refreshes your spirit and recharges your
energy. Then, when you jump back into the fray, you're ready and raring to go.
3. Sleep: Never underestimate the curing power of a good night's rest. I
can't tell you how many times I've gone to bed with my confidence shot only to
wake up feeling ready to take on the world. Nothing changed--the problem was still
there--but I was a different person. After getting rest, I felt, thought, and
acted differently.
I'm not suggesting that you take a nap every time something goes wrong. What I am
saying is that you should tell yourself, no matter how much your cranky mind
denies it, that you'll feel better tomorrow.
