A Simple Truth
This checklist takes its cue from Dale Carnegie's principles of winning friends and
influencing people. It only has one item this month, so it's short, simple, and, most
important, it works.
Oh how much an upturn of the mouth can do. Most people, most of the time, don't
realize what their faces are doing. When someone walks into a room, whatever happens
to come across their faces, well, comes across their faces. It may be common, but it
doesn't always make for effective leadership.
If a scowl happens to appear, it projects thoughts and feelings that you may not intend.
Just the other day a friend thought I was angry with her because of my look. I had no
idea I was sending that message. It's time to get that idea.
A smile, unlike that scowl, can work wonders. It can make the other person feel welcome
and important. It immediately puts he or she in a positive state of mind and gets the
juices of productivity flowing. It's a lubricant, one that needs conscious attention.
The next time an employee comes through the front doors or walks into your office, smile.
Make it real--no one appreciates insincerity--and you'll get a smile in return, not to
mention an employee far more willing to work for your vision.
