The Sweetness of Anticipation
Question: I once heard someone complaining about his life. It was a routine that
had long since grown tedious, but he didn't know how to improve it. "How do I add
a little joy?" he wondered.
Answer: I've been waiting eagerly to receive a reply from an author I had written.
For months checking the mail was as exciting as cutting my nails--no mail is good mail, at
least that's what I believe--but now that I have something to look forward to, I race down
the steps to see if something has arrived. There's a good tip here.
Have something to look forward to. And don't wait for it to come to you; make it happen.
This will set off so many staples of happiness--anticipation, hope, excitement--while helping
to beat back any creeping signs of crankiness.
What to do? Copy me and write to someone you admire, and do it with an actual piece of
paper and a pen. Do small experiments or studies. (I know of one person who glued a quarter
to the ground and watched with delight as passers-by tried to pick it up--not recommended,
but it gets the idea across.)
Whatever your particular flavor of fun may be, do something that makes you wait for an
anticipated result. It will give you something to look forward to, something to have fun
with, and something to distract you from the weight of the world.
