Motivation Clinic Reader Question
I am a PhD student and have just a few more weeks to go until I'm done. However, I procrastinate when I know I should be working. Any tips on how to make it through the final stages and get that extra push?

Pamela Nicholas
Atlanta, GA

Our Response
Dear Pamela:

Greta question! You've struck the heart of an important motivation topic with this question. Millions of people from all walks of life, whether working toward their PhD to working toward the final steps of a new, healthier lifestyle runs into the dilemma you've pinpointed.

In most cases, it is far easier to begin than end. In the beginning of a new goal or idea, everything is fresh and exciting. The newness of it all drives you forward. But soon, the drive begins to fade.

Why does this happen? The main reason: The power and presence of the reasons you had in mind when you first began faded or even vanished entirely.

When you first begin, the reasons that motivate you to act are strong in your mind. They are always there, driving you forward. But in the chaos of the world around you, the focus shifted to the other things in your life, and even to the negatives associated with your goal (time invested, energy invested, opportunities misses, etc.)

The key to finishing strong is to bring back those reasons and place them at the front of your mind. Make a list of why you wanted to earn your degree in the first place, including as many details as possible. Take your list a step further and make the items visual, gathering pictures or symbols that represent your most powerful reasons.

Finishing may be more difficult than starting, but it's not impossible. By bringing your reasons for success back to mind, you'll find the motivation you need to keep going grows and grows as you near the completion of your goal.
