============================================ Do You Hear Voices? When confronted with a challenge, what do you say to yourself? Each of us has a certain internal script that we run through when we think about improving something in our lives. With the wrong script in place, your chances of success may be eliminated before you begin. But the reverse is also true. If you use positive and empowering self-talk each time you face a challenging situation, your chance for achievement skyrockets. You see, the words you say to yourself either set you up to fail or to succeed, it's that simple. What does your self-talk sound like? IN THE BEGINNING John Croft was a young man who often found himself frustrated and hopeless. Each time he set a goal, nothing changed. He met failure at every turn, and wanted to give up completely. John was ready to accept a mediocre, unhappy life because he was tired of setting himself up to fail. John soon learned the concept of self-talk, and recognized that his internal dialogue was sabotaging every goal he created. Immediately after telling himself he wanted to change, he would then run through the following self- conversation: 'What are you doing? You mess everything up. You fail at everything. You know you can't do this. You're only going to fail, so why try to begin with? Stick with what you have and be happy with it.' This is what John said to himself every time he wanted to work for a better life. No wonder he didn't succeed. His brain was focused only on what he couldn't do, and how foolish it was for him to try anything at all. CHANGING THE CONVERSATION John challenged his dialogue by testing it with ojbectionable standards (Do I always fail?). After realizing his dialogue wasn't representing the actual truth, he created a new dialogue, and repeated it to himself whenever he was working to improve his life. It went something like this: 'You can do this. If someone else has succeeded, you can too. The reward of success is well worth the work and sacrifice. You will learn from each failure and eventually succeed.' This new conversation changed the focus. He now thought about how he could succeed. What a difference that made! John used his brain to think of ways he could advance and achieve his goals. The mind is such a powerful tool, and when he gave it the right peices, his mind created a magnificent picture. WHAT DO YOU SAY? What stage are you in? When you think about making things better for yourself or your family, do you begin with an empowering conversation, or a sabotaging dialogue? Recognize your pattern today. If you begin with negative self-talk, you have just discovered why you become frustrated when trying to change.
