============================================ A 3-Step System to Create Lasting Change As honesty increases, so too does motivation. Change is at the center of motivation. You want to get motivated in order to change your life in some way; to make an improvement, to do something new, to take a risk. In one way or another, the goal behind any effort is to change and improve upon current situations. To fully understand the dynamics present in the process of change, you must first take off your blinders and take a real, honest look at your situation. No excuses, no blaming and no pointing fingers. You are where you are because of the choices you have made. If you can agree with that, continue... UNDERLYING PAYOFFS You are getting, whether you realize it or not, a payoff or benefit for doing everything you are doing. A man sitting in a chair watching television may say he wants to get in shape and work out, but the payoff of sitting in the chair and doing nothing outweigh the perceived payoff of working out. The same is true for everything you do. If you can't seem to get motivated to do something, you are receiving a stronger payoff for inaction than you are for action. This isn't a theory or rocket science, it's simply the truth. You do things because you get a benefit, payoff or reward for doing them. You choose whatever you perceive as delivering the greatest reward. WHAT ARE YOUR PAYOFFS FOR INACTION? Now it's time to take a look at yourself and your goals. Think about your health, relationships, success at work, peace of mind and personal happiness and any other area of your life that you find important. Within each area you are acting in a way that brings you the highest perceived payoff. I say perceived because in many situations what you thought was more rewarding actually turns out to do you more harm in the end. Make a list of three or four changes you would like to make in your life, or list changes that you have been working on for some time. Next to each item, list the payoff for both inaction and action. This isn't an easy step, and you may have to really think long and hard about some of the situations. The answers are there, but you might have to dig a little to find them. TIPPING THE SCALES If you want change, then you must create a situation where the payoff from taking action outweighs the payoff for continued inaction. If you can tip the scales in this way, change will naturally occur. Is it easy? No way! Is it possible? Of course! This, like any other worthy cause, will take time and effort. The more you understand about the process, the easier it will be for you to make long lasting improvements. Grasping the idea that there is an underlying payoff for everything you do, whether that be action or inaction, will give you a great start on the long and winding road of success and happiness. As you learn more about motivation, you will soon see the truth and the picture of how things work will come into focus.
