============================================ ::Motivation Secrets: Overcome Your Fears with the Two R's:: My heart pounded faster and faster as I slowly reached my hand toward the phone. So much so that I just knew the few people outside my office could hear it thumping away in my chest. Thumping chest aside, I had to do it. I couldn't let my fear beat me. I couldn't walk away from the phone without following through. I soon found this was easier said than done. It was a beautiful day outside. The sun was casting rays through the open blinds of my office window lighting up the entire room. But I couldn't enjoy the weather. I had another matter on my mind. I had entered my office that late afternoon to speak with a very unhappy customer (this was before I left my management position to give my full attention to writing and speaking). To be honest, unhappy doesn't quite describe this woman's disposition. She was on the warpath and was diligently working to tarnish the company's image for as many happy customers as possible. It was a very serious problem, and one that needed to be dealt with asap. I was the lucky one chosen to put an end to her negative campaign. I made it as far as putting my hand on the receiver, but stopped dead in my tracks. _________________________________________________ Have You Experienced This? _________________________________________________ After spending this much time in the field of human behavior and motivation, I know that most people experience something very similar to my disgruntled customer dilemma. I knew I had something to do, but I let fear stand in the way. Have you ever dealt with this type of situation? Have you wanted to take a step toward a goal but let fear stand in your way? If so, you're not alone, not even close. Many people are afraid to do what it takes to achieve their goals. They walk up to the phone with their hearts throbbing but can't get themselves to act. They walk away feeling dejected, beaten, and humiliated. But that day in my office was different. I may have been afraid to act, but I had no doubt I would do it. You see, I had a secret weapon. _________________________________________________ The Moment of Change _________________________________________________ After several rounds of the childish dial-and-hang-up routine, I practiced what I preached. I stopped, closed my eyes, and after a few moments sat down in my chair and dialed the number. My heart was still doing a dance in my chest, but I was unwavering in my actions. I knew what I had to do and after following a principle that works like magic from the first key of motivation, I was able to follow through. The conversation was just as I had expected - uneasy and uncomfortable - but I did it. I overcame the fear. Just how exactly was it done? Read on. _________________________________________________ What Every Success Knows _________________________________________________ As I walked toward the phone, my brain was doing what most everyone's brain does in similar circumstances - it was assessing the situation and focusing entirely on fear. 'This isn't going to be good.' 'How can I get out of making the call?' 'I don't want to do this.' When the majority of people encounter something they are afraid to do, they run through this very same routine. They focus only on what could go wrong and how bad it will make them feel. However, every successful person knows that fear is part of the process. If you want something better in your life, you have to confront your fears head on. But here's the great news. Overcoming your fears doesn't necessarily mean charging forward, terrified and miserable. There are tricks and techniques you can use to help you calm and diminish your fears, making it exciting to move ahead. And that's exactly what I did. _________________________________________________ The Keys to Moving Past Fear _________________________________________________ The first key to motivation is desire. Within this key is a principle that causes action. If you are afraid, you simply refocus on this principle and you'll be driven forward. When I closed my eyes I focused on two things: rewards and regrets. I stopped thinking about what I didn't want and forced myself to think about these two aspects of the situation. Rewards of making the call: - Putting an end to a customer's tarnishing of our image - Displaying to my supervisor that I could handle difficult situations - Discovering for myself that I could handle difficult situations Regrets of not making the call: - Allowing a simple phone call to scare me off - Allowing an angry customer to beat me - Failing to live up to my standard What a difference this made in my state of mind. Before I was afraid to act, but after refocusing on the rewards and regrets, I was actually angry with myself. I was angry that I would let such a simple action beat me, angry that I wasn't in control of the situation. With these new thoughts in mind, there was no way I would back down. I took action and made the call. _________________________________________________ The Reason You Will Succeed _________________________________________________ The principle of rewards and regrets is among the most important and powerful of the motivation principles. When you focus on these two aspects of any goal you will alter your state of mind. You will replace fear with determination and courage. Hesitation will be transformed into focused action. Whenever you want to achieve something new in your life you are going to meet with fear. From my personal experience I can tell you that the majority of people back down and give in.
