It was during the week of New Years when Kelly Parker
really came alive.

It wasn't that the rest of the year left her unhappy, she
enjoyed her job and her co-workers, but nothing could
compare to the days leading up to the new year.

I was amazed at what I would see happen in Kelly. Normally
a quite, reserved girl, Kelly would often keep to herself.
While she was a very friendly woman, her comfort zone was
in the shadows, not the limelight.

But what a change the new year would bring...

Kelly would literally bubble with happiness. Her eyes would
open wider than I thought possible for a human being, and 
the smile that came across her face could light up a room.

No more than a few words would come from Kelly during any
other time of the year, but it was sometimes difficult to
get her to stop talking around New Years.

To put it simply, the real Kelly would come out at this
time. The happy, excited, joyous woman who was trapped
inside felt it was okay to interact with the world, if only
for a short time. It was something I looked forward to 
every year.

The reason for Kelly's transformation held the magic within
her story. It wasn't the excitement of a new year that
allowed her to break out of her comfort zone and really
enjoy life. It wasn't the parties or the countdown in Times
Square.

It was something very special and unique to Kelly.

Each year, Kelly's department at work would create quite a
lavish scenery for the office. A new theme was picked every
November, and it was her job to direct the project from
start to finish.

One year the office was turned into a rainforest. You had
to see it to believe it. Stepping off of the elevator was
like stepping into another world. Trees, plants, bugs, the
sounds of the forest...it was the closest you could get to
being there without actually traveling around the world.

The stunning scenery made is clear that Kelly loved to use
her creative side. She absolutely loved it.

Working long into the night was far from a chore - it was a
gift. It is always such a fulfilling experience to see
someone doing what they love, and Kelly never let me down.
