3 Steps to Maintaining Your Winning Attitude

Creating a positive attitude for yourself is a challenging goal itself, but it becomes even more so when others around you have negative attitudes.

It is true that you become somewhat like that company you keep. If that company is negative, follow these tips to minimize their effect.

1. BRING IT TO THEIR ATTENTION
The most difficult choice is also the most effective. Talking with your friend about their negativity can help them make changes, if it is handled with care.

A topic like this can cause defensiveness and anger. Put yourself in their shoes, and proceed carefully. Let them know you are only trying to help, and that you also need to work on your attitude. If this is something that won't work for you, perhaps the next tip will help.

2. START YOUR OWN POSITIVE CONVERSATION
Before your friend can create a negative situation, bring up good news and positive things to talk about. They may begin to follow your lead and add their own positive thoughts.

This will help to accomplish two things. First, it will help to ensure that your conversation isn't negative. Second, you may help your friend gain a positive attitude about life.

3. WALK AWAY
There are times when talking doesn't work. For these situations, simply walk away. If the negative talk of others is too much for you to take, politely exit and spend your time somewhere else.

Being surrounded by negativity can rub off on you. These tips can help you avoid negativity and create positive situations for both you and the company you keep.
