The Secrets to Success
Three runners took their places. They all entered this
race with the same goal; to cross the finish line first,
to win the race. Their goals may have been the same, but
their attitudes were very different.
As they waited, you could see their breath in the cold
air. They had all trained the same, and their strengths
were nearly equal. The race was a toss up.
3...2...1...bang!
The runners shot off like loaded springs. They were
within inches of each other into the first turn. The
crowd was going crazy, screaming and cheering their
favorite to victory.
ACCEPT UNFORTUNATE CIRCUMSTANCES
Around the second turn, two of the runners accidently
bumped into one another. This slowed both of them
slightly, but nothing that had to hinder their success.
Two people were slowed, but only one continued. The other
stopped and yelled to the judges and timers. 'How is that
fair? He bumped me! This isn't fair! I want a new start!'
the upset runner complained to anyone who would listen.
CHOOSE TO RESPOND, NOT REACT
As he continued blaming the world for his problems, the
race carried on. The other runner who was also slowed by
the incident was closing in on first place. The crowd rose
to their feet in anticipation of the finish.
They were neck and neck down the stretch. No one could
tell who would win. The other athletes at the event took
notice. All eyes were on the two runners. They came around
the final turn holding nothing back.
FOSTER A WINNING ATTITUDE
Hooray!!! The crowd roared as a runner crossed the finish
line. Who won? That's not important. Everyone who attended
saw the winner.
The only person who didn't know who won the race was the
runner who gave up when life handed him a situation he
didn't think was fair.
ACCEPT THE SITUATION AND MOVE FORWARD
Instead of accepting the circumstances and pushing ahead,
a possible victory was thrown away. The runner thought
that complaining about his circumstances would bring about
a better result than giving his best effort.
When life hands you a situation that you aren't extremely
fond of, you have two choices: move ahead, or stop and
blame the world. We can't control what happens to us, but
we can control our attitude. In the end, the control of
our attitude towards life is more powerful than any one
single event that occurs in our lives. Make the right
choice.
