A 3-Step Process to Crystal Clear Communication

'But that's not what I said!'
'What I meant was...'
'Why don't you listen to me?'

If you have heard these things in your life, then you realize how important it is to communicate clearly. When you speak to another person, you have no idea what they are hearing, unless you use a few tips when speaking.

1. ASK QUESTIONS
As you are communicating with someone, be sure to ask if they have any questions, or if they understand what you have just said. You may find that they need a different explanation, or that they are a little confused.

2. STEP INTO THEIR SHOES
As you are speaking, you can try to see it from their point of view. Would you be a little defensive if someone said your words to you? When you are talking with someone else, it helps to remember that they are completely different from you. They have different ideas and thoughts about things, and a different personality. What sounds clear to you may cause worry or frustration to others.

3. WATCH FOR FEEDBACK
When you are talking, watch for nonverbal feedback. Are their arms or legs crossed? Do they look worried, frustrated, or lost? If so, ask if they understand what you are trying to say. This way you'll be sure to make your point without causing negative feelings.

Using these tips can help you to become a better communicator immediately. Remember, what we say isn't always what someone else hears.
